Timloc Helping Hedgehogs One Highway at a Time

Date Posted: 25th February 2022

The release of the ‘State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022’ report shows promising signs of potential recovery for urban hedgehogs and installing a Hedgehog Highway could assist the species further.

As part of an ongoing sustainability initiative, Timloc Building Products, part of the Alumasc Group plc, produced a hedgehog highway from their manufacturing facility in Howden, East Yorkshire to help tackle the declining number of hedgehogs across the UK.

The Hedgehog Highway by Timloc has been designed to incentivise the public to connect their gardens, enabling hedgehogs to roam freely and forage for food and shelter without restriction. The highway makes a hole aesthetically pleasing and states the hole’s purpose to avoid accidental obstruction.

Britain’s hedgehog population has been on the decline for decades. In the 1950s, it was estimated that there were over 30 million hedgehogs, but in 2020 with a predicted count of only around 1 million, the hedgehog was added the IUCN list of endangered species – classified as vulnerable to extinction, possibly in the next 10 years.

The report highlights encouraging signs that urban areas are showing stabilisation in numbers and that allowing hedgehogs in to the garden and green spaces is key.

Kirsty Harrop, Marketing Manager at Timloc Building Products, said:

“It’s reassuring to see that hedgehogs are beginning to prosper in urban areas compared to their traditionally more rural habitat. This confirms the importance of allowing hedgehogs into our gardens and green spaces via a highway.”

It may be positive news for urban areas, however alarmingly for rural regions the population still saw a steep decline (between one third and three-quarters) particularly in the eastern areas of England.

There are a number of factors to the reasoning of further decline including loss of habitat, predators, and road collisions.

Continued Kirsty:

“With every sale of the Hedgehog Highway, a donation is made to hedgehog charities and organisations to aid their continued work in rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing sick or injured hedgehogs. A number of charities we have donated to have commented that they have had an increase in submissions year on year and Timloc believe their work is key to help combat any further decline.”

The Hedgehog Highway by Timloc is quick and easy to install, simply cut a 130mm x 130mm square hole in the bottom of the garden fence or wall and line up the highway with the holes and secure in place.

Now available in Black, Brown, Grey and Yellow.
