Holderness Hedgehog Hospital Receives Donation

Date Posted: 06th August 2024

Holderness Hedgehog Hospital, a dedicated charity in the East Riding of Yorkshire, has been awarded a £200 donation from Hedgehog Highway by Timloc.

This contribution supports the hospital’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and release sick, injured, or orphaned hedgehogs in the region.

Founded in 2016, Holderness Hedgehog Hospital has grown significantly and became an official charity in 2018. The hospital sometimes manages over 550 admissions, with a committed team of volunteers working tirelessly to care for each hedgehog and release them back into the wild when ready.

Vicky Pennington, a trustee of Holderness Hedgehog Hospital, commented:

“Since 2016, we have grown substantially, and we now have several satellite rescues within the region, including Keyingham, Burton Pidsea, and Skeffling. This summer has been particularly busy, with many hedgehogs dehydrated and hoglets needing a lot of care and attention.”

Beyond rescue and rehabilitation, Vicky emphasises the importance of educational talks.

“Raising awareness is crucial,” she says. “We provide talks to groups and the public, offering advice on what to do if a poorly hedgehog is found. Educating the community ensures more hedgehogs can be helped and ultimately returned to their natural habitats.”

To support Holderness Hedgehog Hospital’s vital work, Timloc Building Products, part of Alumasc plc, selected the organisation for their latest £200 donation from the proceeds of Hedgehog Highway by Timloc. Each purchase of these highways includes a donation to hedgehog charities across the UK.

Vicky continues:

“The donation from Timloc is greatly appreciated, providing us with much-needed supplies such as food and cleaning products during one of our busiest times. It is encouraging to see that the donation comes from a product designed to help hedgehogs. Highways are simple to install but make a huge difference in enabling hedgehogs to roam freely in gardens or green spaces. This allows them to find food, water, and shelter more easily.”

The Hedgehog Highway by Timloc is available in four colours: Black, Brown, Grey, and Yellow, and can be purchased as a single or multi-pack. These highways are small openings that can be installed in garden fences or walls, allowing hedgehogs to move safely between gardens. This connectivity is vital for their survival, helping them find food, mates, and nesting sites.

Timloc’s initiative not only funds important charities but also directly benefits hedgehogs by promoting the creation of these essential pathways. Homeowners across the UK are encouraged to install hedgehog highways to support the local wildlife.

Vicky invites everyone to join the effort to support hedgehog rescues by installing highways.

“Every small action makes a big difference,” she says. “By installing a highway, you are helping to create a safer and more connected environment for hedgehogs.”
