Warwickshire Based Hedgehog Charity Receives Much Needed Donation

Date Posted: 13th December 2022

Most hedgehog charities heavily rely on donations to keep up their essential work in rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing sick or injured hedgehogs back in to the wild.

The £100 donation generated from sales of the Hedgehog Highway by Timloc Building Products part of the Alumasc Group plc, was awarded to Warwickshire Hedgehog Rescue, a county wide group.

In the UK, the European hedgehog is classed as a vulnerable to extinct species and the major contributing factors for their decline include; loss of habitat and road accidents.

Ken Faisey of Warwickshire Hedgehog Rescue commented: “In the autumn and winter months, hedgehogs are particularly vulnerable to illnesses as their natural food sources decline. They may eat many more slugs and snails, which themselves contain higher levels of parasites, these transfer to the hedgehogs making them sick. Contrary to popular belief, slugs and snails usually make up less than 5% of their natural diet.”

“We find the largest annual financial cost is for medical care such as medication, specialist food and veterinary treatments to help treat the many hedgehogs that come in to our care.”

The year round work of rehabilitating and releasing the hedgehogs that are admitted to the rescue is the charity’s main objective which contributes to the conservation efforts of this species.

Winter will be a busy time for the organisation as there are some hedgehogs currently in care, who haven’t quite made their release weight, that have decided to go into hibernation and need to be monitored, usually by a team of experienced foster carers. There are others who are smaller or still receiving treatment who aren’t able to go into hibernation and will need to be kept warm and fed at the main rescue sites.

Commented Issy Cooke of Timloc Building Products: “We often forget that charities have huge responsibilities and will still be caring for the animals over the festive period, their hard work and efforts never stops.

“This is why with every purchase of a Hedgehog Highway by Timloc a donation is made to these hard working charities like Warwickshire Hedgehog Rescue. We hope it makes them feel appreciated and that their vital work is key to help the much loved hedgehog.”

The purpose of a hedgehog highway is to highlight the fence holes purpose to avoid obstruction. This then allows the hedgehog to roam through garden spaces. They are able to forage for food, water and find shelter which is key for hedgehog survival.

Because hedgehogs can travel up to 2km a day in search for food, allowing them in to the green spaces reduces their need to take more of a dangerous path like across a busy main road.

Timloc Building Products is working hard to raise awareness amongst the building industry and has supplied Hedgehog Highways to various housing developments to assist housebuilders in making a conscious effort towards hedgehog conservation.

The Hedgehog Highway by Timloc is available in Black, Brown, Grey or Yellow, in single or multi packs.
