Spring – A Busy Time of Year for Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary

Date Posted: 20th April 2022

A family run charity based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire recently received a donation of £100 from East Yorkshire based building products manufacturer, Timloc Building Products, part of the Alumasc Group Plc.

Set in 10 Acres of picturesque woodlands, fields and hedgerows, the charity works hard to rehabilitate sick or injured hedgehogs in their purpose built facilities. Once the hedgehogs make a full recovery, they are then released back in to the wild.

Martin Maylin, Trustee of Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary commented:

“We appreciate the donation from Timloc as springtime is an extremely busy period for us.

“We will be releasing a lot of hedgehogs that were in our care over winter, but its is also the time were orphaned hoglets are found without their mum and need specialist care.”

Martin continued:

“Spring is also the time where hedgehogs come out of hibernation and are extremely dehydrated, and we get many calls. This is why it is extremely important for garden owners to leave out a water bowl alongside food.”

Through Timloc Building Products’ pledge to sustainability, the leading manufacturer created the Hedgehog Highway to help the species that is classified as vulnerable to extinction. With every sale, a donation is made to charities who work hard in the preservation of hedgehogs in the UK.

Martin Maylin commented:

“The single best thing homeowners with a garden can do to help hedgehogs is to create a Hedgehog Highway. This 13cm x 13cm hole at the base of a garden fence or wall allows hedgehogs to pass through, increasing their habitat and chances of survival.

“Timloc Building Products has created a highway in a choice of four colours: Black, Brown, Grey and Yellow. The highway frames the hole and highlights the purpose to avoid accidental obstruction as well as providing a fun feature for your garden.”

The Hedgehog Highway by Timloc is made from 100% recycled plastic and can be easily fitted, enabling hedgehogs to roam freely. They will be able to forage for food and shelter without restriction and help tackle the declining number of this special species.
